This year has been noticeably different than other years when it comes to big bass.  It has gotten to the point this year where I pretty much expect to catch at least one fish in the 5-10 pound range every time I go out, no matter what lake I’m on.  If I don’t, I’m disappointed and it was a “tough” day.  This is a remarkably different attitude than I’ve had in the past.  So why is this year so different?  What has changed from previous years?  Now, granted, the lake I spend more time on than anywhere is Lake Austin, which is a renowned big bass lake here in central Texas.  So is it the lake?  Is it better all of the sudden?  No, I don’t think so.   [Read more…]

This year has been a very weird one for me as far as tournament fishing goes.  I guess that overall, it has kind of been a bust.  This year has been plagued with boat problems, schedule conflicts, and sickness.  The plan was to fish the Media Bass and TTZ tournament trails.  However, I only ended up being able to fish a few events in each trail, and because of that, I do not qualify to fish the championships for either trail.  There were also a couple of tournaments that I went to, but ended up having boat problems early on in the day that cost me those tournaments.   [Read more…]

Fishing at night can be a great way to avoid the heavy summer crowds on some of our lakes, and not only that, but it can really increase your odds of catching a Lake Austin giant.  However, night fishing does come with its challenges.  Low-visibility at night can make it difficult for beginners to feel confident in what they are doing as you have to rely almost completely on your sense of feel.  Trying to cast at targets along a shoreline can also be difficult as the darkness takes a toll on your depth perception at times.  However, if you can make it past these obstacles, fishing at night can be extremely rewarding!
