Lake Austin Description: Located on the Colorado River in the city of Austin, Lake Austin has a surface area of 1,599 acres and reaches depths of 75 ft. It is considered a constant level lake as the water level rarely fluctuates. The lake was impounded in 1939 and has much more of a river feel than a lake feel. Lake Austin winds through the green hills of Austin with the occasional scenic cliff along the banks here and there with several overhanging trees. Water visibility through much of it is typically clear with up to 10 ft visibility or more at times, but can become stained after heavy rains due to the many creeks that flow into the lake. The primary structure and cover in the lake are shoreline rocks, overhanging trees, and boat docks. The lake is currently void of aquatic vegetation due to the overstocking of grass carp from 2010-2013. Hopefully vegetation will begin to take hold again in the near future.

Fishing Lake Austin: Lake Austin is one of the lakes that I take into consideration for clients looking to bag some bigger bass. Bites often aren’t as plentiful on this lake, but the bass are often bigger. Formerly one of the best bass fishing lakes in the nation, the ecosystem took a hard hit due to the overpopulation of grass carp sometime around 2013. While the fishing has not been as spectacular on Lake Austin as it used to be, it still remains as one of the better lakes for targeting large bass. There have also been significant signs that the ecosystem and the fishing have slowly but surely begun to bounce back after the grass carp fiasco. Methods required to catch good numbers of bass on Lake Austin are typically more advanced and not always recommended for beginning fishermen. When things set up right though, beginning anglers can also stand a good chance. Night fishing typically accounts for more big bass taken on this lake than any other method.
Typical Lake Austin Bass Fishing Methods: With the copious amount of private boat docks on the lake, skipping weightless soft plastic baits under the docks is probably the top producing tactic throughout the year. A wacky-rigged senko would be the number one choice for this method. I also often find great success with a small squarebill crankbait, such as a River2Sea Biggie Smalls, around shallow shoreline cover and boat docks. A drop-shot rig fished on offshore structure or boat docks also does a great job of getting bites. Other than that, various topwater lures, particularly a hollow-body frog such as the River2Sea Bully Wa II, can find good success during the warmer months.
